Sylvan
Heights Waterfowl Center recognizes the importance of presenting
conservation education to school children, and the general public at our Waterfowl Park & Eco-Center.
In addition, we provide training in advanced avicultural techniques for zoo and wildlife professionals, as well as college-level interns, at the Avian Breeding Preserve. The avian collection at the Waterfowl Center is ideal for viewing, demonstrating
and getting close to wildlife. We have developed three educational
programs that greatly aid in meeting our education objectives.

AVIAN HUSBANDRY & MANAGEMENT
PROGRAM
This
program is designed to teach zoo and wildlife professionals many
of the techniques Mike Lubbock has used successfully over the years
in breeding a wide variety of birds. The goal of this program
is to train the next generation of conservation-oriented aviculturalists.
Participants receive a copy of Mike Lubbock's highly acclaimed Avian Husbandry & Management Manual--exclusive to those attending the Avian Program.

In a partnership with the North Carolina Zoological Society, Sylvan Heights’ mission has greatly expanded into an education-oriented destination for school children and visitors. At the Sylvan Heights Waterfowl Park & Eco-Center, opened in October 2006, many rare and endangered species of waterfowl are visible from open walk-through exhibits. In addition, visitors will find themselves "face to beak" with a variety of exotic birds--emus, kookaburras, toucans, parrots and many more. Bird shows and wildlife eco-tours are presented on this pristine 18-acre site--adjacent to Sylvan Heights' Avian Breeding Preserve. The Park, with its playground, picnic area and meeting rooms, is a great place for a family outing, field trip or celebrating a special event. The Park is closed on Mondays.
